The award started from 2002 by the Japanese Government in order to promote barrier-free universal designs to enable all citizens, including the elderly, disabled, pregnant women, and/or people with small children, to enjoy its social activities safely and comfortably. Shinano Kenshi was recognized for its enormous contribution to supporting the visually-impaired for their self-reliance, participation in social activities, learning and employment opportunities by the development and manufacturing of Digital Talking Book players and recorders that comply with the DAISY format under the brand name of PLEXTALK®. The DAISY, which stands for Digital Accessible Information System, allows a person with a visual impairment or a print disability to read and navigate through talking books. Library services for the visually impaired have converted their titles into the DAISY format. In order to read DAISY formatted books, Shinano Kenshi has developed and produced DAISY players since 1993.
“We are very honored to receive this award.” said Shinya Kanai, General Manger of Assistive Technology Products Business Unit of Shinano Kenshi. “We would like to share this honor with all the libraries for the blind and the volunteer organizations that have supported us to promote DAISY books to the visually impaired throughout Japan and the world.”
